Silver Plate: A composite material composed of a base metal coated with a layer of silver, applied by electroplating.

Standard Plate: A term used to describe an electroplated coating of silver applied to flatware, the quantity being two troy ounces of pure silver per gross of teaspoons, with other pieces in proportion. The average coating thickness is approximately 0.0003 inch.

Sterling Silver: An alloy containing 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper.

Triple Plate: A silver coating having an average thickness three times that of "Standard Plate."

Troy Ounce: One troy ounce equals 20 pennyweights or 480 grains or 31.103495 grams. There are 14.583333 troy ounces to the avoirdupois pound.
